FTP instructions

The following instructions assume that you have installed an FTP client. To install WinSCP, the recommended SGI FTP client, click here. Follow the instructions that display as part of the client package, then return to this page to begin the FTP transfer.

  1. Open your FTP client. The client login window displays. The example below shows the login window for the WinSCP client.

  2. Enter the address for the FTP server in the Host name field. Enter your user name and password in the User name and Password fields.

  3. Click the Login button.

  1. An authentication window displays, showing status of the connection to the FTP server. If the information (host, user name, and password) provided was correct, the connection should be authenticated in 10-15 seconds.

  1. The following (or similar) Warning window displays the first time that the FTP connection is established. Click Yes.

  1. The main window for the client will open. WinSCP utilizes an interface that is very similar in appearance and function to Windows Explorer. The following image shows the file panel directory with local files in the left pane and files located on the server in the right pane.

  1. You transfer files using drag and drop between the Windows Explorer pane on the left and the server pane on the right.

  2. To transfer a file, navigate to the location of the local file that you want to transfer.

  3. Click the file in your local directory.

  4. Drag it to the directory location in the right frame where it is to be moved. Your default destination is public_ftp. DO NOT TRANSFER FILES TO ANY OTHER LOCATION.

  1. The Copy window displays asking you to confirm the transfer of a copy of the file to the public_ftp directory. Click Copy.

  1. The file is copied from the local directory to the remote directory on the FTP server.

  2. To exit the WinSCP client, either select Quit from the Commands menu or close out by clicking the X in the upper-right corner.

  1. Depending on your client, configuration, or method of exiting, the following Confirm window might display, asking if you want to close the client. Click OK.
